How to get your product recommended by ChatGPT and Perplexity using partner content

AI assistants answer buyer questions by citing pages they trust. Here is how to find the questions where you are missing, brief creators to answer them, and measure whether the citations arrive.

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of getting cited in AI answers the way SEO is about ranking in search results. The mechanism is simple: when someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity "best attachment style quiz", the assistant retrieves pages, picks the ones it trusts, and names the products those pages recommend. If no page about you is retrieved, you are not in the answer.

Step 1: find the questions where you are missing

Ask the assistants the questions your buyers ask and record who gets recommended. Three outcomes matter: no brand is recommended (an open gap), a competitor is recommended (a gap with a target), or you are recommended (done). Tools such as InsightWonder run these checks daily across several models and list the open gaps.

Step 2: answer the question with partner content, not ads

AI answers cite independent pages far more than brand pages. A YouTube review, a blog comparison or a Reddit thread that genuinely answers the question, with your product shown as part of the answer, is what gets retrieved. This is why partner content works for GEO where ads cannot. Brief creators with the exact question, ask them to use it as the title, and ask for a direct answer in the first paragraph or the first thirty seconds.

  1. Turn each open question into a campaign: the question, the suggested format (video for commercial intent, article for informational), the number of pieces, a bounty per delivered piece.
  2. Let partners apply, review their channel, accept.
  3. When the piece is live, give it its own tracking link so clicks and sales from that exact piece are measured.

Step 3: measure citations, not just traffic

Register each delivered URL as a citation source and re-check the question periodically. The moment an answer cites the partner's page, the question moves from open to resolved. Over a quarter you learn which formats and which partners get cited, which tells you where to spend the next campaign budget.

What a good brief contains

  • The question verbatim, as people ask it.
  • What the assistant currently says and who it cites.
  • The one-sentence answer you want the piece to lead with.
  • A real example of your product solving the problem, not a feature list.
  • Where the tracking link goes: description, first comment or the article body.

FAQ

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. AI assistants retrieve pages that already rank or are widely linked. Good SEO raises the odds a page is retrieved; GEO shapes whether the retrieved page recommends you.

How long until citations appear?

Typically two to eight weeks after a piece is published, depending on how quickly the assistant re-crawls the source.

Can I pay creators per citation?

Pay per delivered piece and per sale instead. Citations depend on the assistant, not the creator, and paying for them invites spam.
